You Shaved Nice Today!

The title says it all, these days, the Internet is almost literally integrated into everything, mobile phones, watches, wristbands and even fridges! There are so many house hold objects that now depend on technology, and people take that for granted.

People don’t realise the amount of technology and social progression that goes into everyday tools and objects, and Neil DeGrasse Tyson exemplifies this by saying, “No one goes up to you and says, ‘Hey! You shaved nice today! The act of doing it perfectly, is the measure of it going unnoticed“. It doesn’t really have anything to do with The Internet’s integration, but it’s a great speech that you should check out!

For The Lulz

https://imgur.com/WqOiScC

Last week for DIGC202, I talked about Anonymous as a new form of protestors acting unethically for an ethical goal, and as damaging as this collective can be, Anonymous is rather mature compared to groups such as LulzSec.

LulzSec is a “black-hat computer hacker group”, meaning that they essentially hack ‘for the lols’. I’ve been interested in computer hacker groups for a while, the use of technology for ‘political action’ was a new concept in a field that I had immense interest in.

Lulzsec really differs form Anonymous, because they are organised, and have people in charge. The most notable differences however, is not within the hierarchy, but rather in their morals. Since they’re a ‘black-hat’ computer hacker group, their goals are not in line with their morals or any political influences, but instead enjoying hacking for the fun of it.

Meda202: Phoney

My artwork this semester for Meda202 is more of a ‘gag-art’ piece than an conceptual art piece. I found it more entertaining and created more of a sense of ‘wonderment’. I wanted people to approach my artwork, interact with it, and be drawn towards it.

My artwork started out as a telephone, that would be connected to a phone-line, and when picked up, would automatically call a random number in the Wollongong area. After some research and some lengthy talks with Glenn, I found out that this idea would be slightly unethical, and slightly illegal. I then considered hooking up the phone directly to the University’s phone system, and it when picked up by the audience, it would automatically call a phone on the University’s system. After some further research, I found that this could result in some negative feedback from the University staff, which could follow me through my studies. Something I didn’t really want looming over my back. Not to mention it would also be highly unethical again.

So my solution to these problems, was to give the impression that when you picked up the phone, it would go to a famous person/characters voicemail! To complete this, I needed to find and download voicemails from celebrities and famous television/movies characters. It took me several hours to find a dozen or so examples for my prototype, and even then, some of the voicemails aren’t the best quality. For my final art piece, I’ll need to find at least 20 or more voicemails in higher quality, as well as some funny situations to put the audience in. After presenting my prototype to the class, they gave some positive feedback as to what kind of audio files I could include as my voicemails. Some people suggested some funny gags, or even pretending to answer the phone.

After gathering the digital side of my artwork, I needed to consider the physical side. I had to find a telephone. I searched for weeks throughout Vinnies and Salvo’s across Sydney and Wollongong. I had in mind a red retro type of telephone (pictured below), but after finding nothing, I searched online to see how much one would cost, and that totally blew me away. $100+ for an old telephone! Not worth it.

The original concept

The very next day, I searched another Salvo’s at Wollongong, and found a great replacement! It was an old children’s telephone that had stopped working. Two dollars later, and it was mine. I took it class, found a screwdriver, and decided to unscrew everything inside of it. Inside of the telephone, was an old circuit board, speakers, batteries and some more components I wouldn’t really need. I opened the red headset part of the telephone and found it hollow.

To complete my art piece, I’d need an Arduino with an audio component attached to it. I’d need to wire it up to a magnetic receiver that could detect when the headset component of the telephone was picked up. I’d also need to insert a speaker into the headset that could play the desired audio file.

In regards to programming the Arduino, I have a solid background in programming, having studied it outside of University, and at an accelerated level at High School, so while I’m confident with the pseudo-code, i’d need to brush up on whatever programming language the Arduino uses.

For this artwork, I didn’t have any inspiration from Artists, however I did get the concept of my piece from a Television show called Louie. In the television show, it depicts a red button in one corner of the art studio, and when pressed, it plays an audio file of someone saying something really offensive. I found this hilarious and captivating, and so I decided to try and making something similar.

So to conclude, off the feedback from the class, I’m expanding the content involved to make it more interesting and captivating. I also need to complete my programming of the Arduino, and prepare how I want to present the piece.

We Are Anonymous

With the online world expanding every day, and the concept of protesting online through clicktivism becoming a common thing, it wasn’t long until it was possible to terrorise or to unethically protest an issue online. Today’s version of protestors breaking and entering to cause havoc are online hackers, and the most prominent example is the collective known as Anonymous.

Anonymous is an online collective of hackers that all have a common goal of hacking ‘for the greater good’. They work together unethically to achieve an ethical goal. and this is why there’s a huge divide in the public concerning whether this group is a group of good or bad people.

The idea behind anonymous is great, because it’s not an organised group with a regular power hierarchy, almost anyone you know, could be in anonymous. You don’t even have to be a computer wizz to help out.

I’m (not) Helping Change The World!

Being a Clicktivist is the modern day version of a protester, because it requires minimal effort, and it’s easy to accomplish. However, there’s huge debate in whether clicktivism actually accomplishes anything. Popular scholars such as Henry Jenkins and Steve Wilkinson sit either side of the issue with their own valid arguments.

So to vocalise this issue, I decided to have a little debate with my friend Alec Bennett (alec1995.wordpress.com) about whether popular social media campaigns such as KONY 2012 and The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge actually accomplished anything through social media.

Finally 20!

So i’m finally 20! Man the years have flown past. My childhood is over, and now I need to pretend to be an adult. The past two years has been absolutely amazing for me, i’ve come a long way from that awkward, unhappy angsty teenager that somehow survived high school. I have amazing friends, an awesome job, and a future that i’m genuinely excited for.

I’ll always be a kid at heart though!

At the end of high school, I expected myself to do an IT or Computer Science course at university, but somehow managed to get myself into a bachelor of Communications and Media. I’ve always loved being behind a camera, and i’m so glad I chose this course, not just because I love what i’m studying, but because i’ve met so many amazing people because of it. Now I work as a contract photographer, I regularly do clubs and modelling, and i’m even starting to get Wedding events, and I only started my label 6 months ago!

I have such a positive outlook on life these days, and i’m so happy with who I am as a person. I’m not afraid to ask for what I want, and i’m prepared to do the impossible for what I want. The next year of my life is going to be dedicated to working and saving money, for that ultimate trip when I graduate University. I want to travel the world, and photograph it and make videos along the way. I want to travel to every corner of the planet, and meet as many people as I can, and just talk to them. See what life is like for them.

I plan on doing a lot more writing and vlogging for my website over the next year, not about anything in particular, just about me and my life I guess. That’s something else that i’ve always wanted to start, but i’ve either never really had the time, or i’m just never happy with how it looks.

But this year of my life, is mine. So here’s to the future, and hoping that one day i’ll see the world!

I AM THE GATEKEEPER

Unfortunately i’m not talking about the Gatekeeper from the classic game ‘Atmosfear’ in this blog post, so if you’re an enthusiast, turn back now! Instead, i’m here to talk about the concept of gatekeeping, and how we’re all actively a gatekeeper online. The concept refers to the actions you take online to read and find information, and actively decide to trust certain sources over others.

Reddit is new type of platform that’s starting to become very mainstream online, and the way it works, can perfectly describe your role as a gatekeeper. It works like a democracy, through a system of upvotes and downvotes. It has so many different ‘sub-reddits’, which you can subscribe to, effectively deciding what content you want to see.

Apple vs Andriod

The Apple vs Android battle for mobile phone supremacy has torn friendships apart. Okay, that might be a bit of an exaggeration, but it’s still a huge issue! Ever since Apple brought out the original iPhone and completely changed the smart phone industry, and Google bringing out Android to compete with them, having the latest smart phone was always a big deal.

Just the amount of reviews and videos about them online can prove it! It almost reminds me of the Mac vs PC debate. This week I decided to take a look at the Apple vs Android mobile war that’s tearing friendships apart.
